About the Shar-Pei

The Shar-Pei is a Chinese hunting and watch-dog and known for 200 years. The breeds origin is in Dialack a region near Guangzhou. Until the middle of the sixties of this century a sufficient number of the original type of Shar-Pei was kept in Hongkong. Hongkong was the first and only place from where Shar-Peiís were exported to other countries. During the seventies some breeders started inbreeding and interbreeding of Shar-Pei with other dogs to attain more wrinkles.

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a medium-sized, compact, watchful and active dog with a short, course coat. Shar-Pei means Ąsand skin". We distinguish between two types of coats, the horse coat and the brush coat with a length of max. 1 inch. When he is still a puppy the whole body of the Shar-Pei is covered with wrinkles. Adult dogs are allowed to have distinctive wrinkles only on their foreheads and shoulders. The dog has an active and bright temper. He is independent and calm, faithful and loving to his owner.

The Chinese Shar-Pei does not like kennels. He needs to be in contact with his family, otherwise he gets timid and restrained, sometimes eccentric. If the Shar-Pei is bred without extremes, he is a healthy and active dog. The more wrinkles he has the more care he needs. As the Shar-Pei is very intelligent and clean by nature, he will become house-trained in a very short time, if his owner sees to it in an appropriate way.
